First off, love and prayers to the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Freddie Gray, Ahmaud Arbery, and the countless number of Black men and women who’ve been unjustly killed and targeted in the past 400 years+ by non-Black people and the police in the United States of America. May their souls rest in peace and may their legacies live on for our future generations to learn from them.

As an Indian American Muslim Creative Consultant and Stylist, I’m learning and working on being a better ally to my Black brothers and sisters. I always ask my friends and peers in the fashion industry on how can we make design, art, content, products etc., accessible and equitable for marginalized communities? How can we create sustainable opportunities and long-term solutions to uplift and support our Black communities? One of the ways I process my own self-serving bias, support initiatives that are inclusive, and appreciate the growing influence Black communities have had on my upbringing and work is to be intentional with the content I choose to engage with.

I call on my friends, peers, family, readers, fellow stylists, and creatives to support Black art, fashion, film, music, literature, magazines, publications, and organizations. I call on you to take the initiative to buy from more Black owned businesses, attend more Black-run events, and engage with Black thought-leaders and creatives.
